Guiding users with a hierarchy of visual information. We apply sound logic and design principals that work on multiple levels.

Massachusetts College of Art and Design

For our nation’s only public art college, we designed an ADA and code compliant sign system to identify entry portals, classrooms, public spaces and utilities in a new media center that connects to its historic classroom and studio buildings.

We collaborated with Ennead Architects/NY and MassArt’s sign shop to achieve a wayfinding and sign system that complements the College's brand identity and palette while using materials appropriate for high traffic use.

96pt. specified products, colors and fonts so signs can be replaced with in-house equipment - which allows the College to be self-sufficient for future needs.

The project included a full scope of programming, design, bid documents, and implementation, including a public bid process overseen by the Boston Redevelopment Authority.

Mass Audubon

This Massachusetts non-profit wildlife conservation organization reached out to 96pt. to provide consulting services for their roll out of new brand standards on wayfinding signs, site and informational maps for 40+ wildlife locations.

Collaborative work with the project team yielded results for new sign standards that hone in on color, typography, legibility, messaging and cost effective retrofitting of the organization’s existing sign structures throughout the state.

BU Student Center

Boston University approached 96pt. to consult with facilities staff who wanted to add more signs to help students and visitors navigate to galleries, classrooms, office suites and amenities located in its Student Center.

We often say "less is more" – and after reviewing existing signs, saw an opportunity to group and prioritize information to improve clarity. We used BU's color and brand standards to create a simple, easy to follow system of sign types for corridors, stairwells, and elevators.

The new signs can be updated and replaced as needed by University staff. The use of aluminum directory cases and wall brackets, paper inserts, and thick card stock sign panels make the system elements recyclable, too.

Arlington High School

Designed on a 22 acre campus for 1,700+ students, Arlington's new 400,000 square foot high school includes state of the art classrooms, black box theatre, community spaces, district offices, pre-school, amphitheater, sports playing fields and more.

Cambridge based HMFH architects invited 96pt. to work collaboratively with them to develop branded logotypes, specialty graphics, donor recognition, wayfinding and code required signs for the new campus.

The high school’s design team undertook a community-engaged process, resulting in architecture that expresses 21st century learning with an aesthetic nod to the town’s historic buildings.

96pt. provided sign programming, design, development and is providing implementation services for the project. With 15 categories of sign types and just under 1,000 signs designed for the school, Phases 1 – 3 are complete and Owner occupied.

The remaining phase of the project is currently under construction, with completion set for mid 2025.

Union Station

Springfield’s historic landmark is a multi-modal transportation center that was revived through a public-private partnership and a collaborative effort by city agencies, transportation vendors, architects and designers. Union Station was architecturally restored and renovated following decades of failed attempts to revive it after closing 40+ years ago.

Teaming with local partners Design and HDR Architects/Boston, 96pt. designed a new brand logotype along with wayfinding and transportation signs for the project. In addition to documentation for a public bid process, 96pt. assisted through sign fabrication and installation.

The award winning project has re-invigorated western Massachusetts multi-modal ground transportation since its re-opening in 2017. https://www.springfieldunionstation.com/

Brooks School

Brooks School in Andover, Massachusetts worked with 96pt. on fresh ways to integrate its long-standing brand identity into various building and site opportunities on its 250 acre campus on Lake Cochichewick.

Boston based architects ARC, designers of Brooks’ new Admission building, referred the school to 96pt.

We dove in, collaborating with marketing and facilities staff to design ADA compliant room signs that formalize the use of Brooks’ iconic shield, colors, and typographic standards – to tie into existing campus graphics and build toward future uses.

Next, we applied these brand standards to a new exterior wayfinding sign system, designed to complement the school’s New England referenced architecture.

The school now has a resource of sign standards that incorporate brand identity, type, color, and sign details that can be readily applied to future building and site projects.

Boston Children's Hospital

Boston Children's Hospital underwent a full lobby renovation and its aging sign program needed a refresh to tie in with its new brand identity. 96pt. provided a full scope of services – from analysis of the existing system and sign ordering to a revamp of wayfinding and sign fabrication to support newer, more cost effective materials and sign updating protocol.

A three-pronged approach to wayfinding using color, icon, and building name originally developed for the hospital was updated throughout the multi-building site. Hospital nomenclature was revisited to ensure destination names were easy to understand. A hierarchy of need-to-know information was developed and implemented through a family of sign types.

Programming, design and installation of the signs took over two years, with over 250 signs to remove and replace. Coordination with Elkus Manfredi Architects and BCH facilities team was a smooth process. All were committed to creating natural placement for signs and graphics that make navigating easier for all – including international patients and visitors.

Cambridge Health Alliance

Cambridge Health Alliance approached 96pt. to assist the organization’s mission to increase visibility of Emergency Service access points at three urban hospital and outpatient sites in the Boston area.

After conducting an audit and analysis of existing wayfinding routes and signs, we documented our findings and recommended next steps for steering committee approval.

Next, we worked alongside CHA’s internal graphic design team to revise and streamline their existing exterior sign system. We changed the hierarchy of information to prioritize Emergency messaging on wayfinding, site and entrance signs to help patients and visitors navigate more efficiently to Emergency entry points.

Collaborating with CHA’s assigned sign fabricator, we provided sign layouts, reviewed shop drawings and samples, and oversaw the successful installation of replacement sign panels and new sign structures for all locations.

Deerfield Academy

96pt. teamed with Architectural Resources Cambridge (ARC) to assist with wayfinding, donor recognition, ADA and code required signs for a newly renovated Center for the Arts at one of the oldest secondary schools in the country.

96pt. developed a hierarchical system to recognize the school’s donors – and developed typographic standards, materials and color palette for the center’s signs and graphics.

We chose metallic bronze and warm tones to complement the interior design of the center’s finishes and details. The result is a sign and graphics system that blends with both its historic woodwork and modern, paneled walls.

BU COLLEGE OF FINE ARTS

Wilson Butler Architects asked 96pt. to collaborate on a renovation project for the Boston University’s College of Fine Arts gallery and common space upgrades.

The century old institutional building interiors were stripped back to reveal architectural details and floor-to-ceiling windows that had been covered for over 50 years. A bright interior finishes palette was paired with understated wayfinding, donor recognition graphics and updated BU sign standards that meet student and visitor needs and Boston’s code requirements.

To accomodate changing staff and room assignments, code compliant signs can be easily ordered and installed by the University’s sign shop.

Boston Children's Imaging

The hospital's 24 hour inpatient and outpatient imaging department underwent a renovation of corridors and public spaces to brighten the circulation routes and help staff and patients find multiple department destinations.

We collaborated with BCH Facilities team, Payette Associate designers and L’Attitude art consultants to finesse a solution that uses color coding unique from general hospital wayfinding along with lighting, finishes and mural sized artwork. We detailed sign materials and fabrication techniques to allow sign changes by in-house staff.

Reliant Medical Group

96pt. teamed with Lavallee Brensinger Architects to provide programming, design, development and roll-out of a comprehensive exterior and interior sign program for several new outpatient service centers in Central Massachusetts.

We collaborated closely with pre-selected sign fabricators to develop fast track production and fabrication solutions to expedite installation for several sites with overlapping construction schedules.

A comprehensive shop drawing and workmanship sample review process allowed us to collect materials that the organization can use as a guide to procure additional signs in the future.
